ABSTRACT

This research delves into the Gandhian philosophical principle of Swaraj, or Gandhi’s idea of freedom, and its foundations in Hindu philosophy. Additionally, this research aims to address the difference between Western ideals of political freedom and Gandhi’s swaraj in response to the ever growing rift between the “Western” and “Eastern'' sides of the world. Using an exploratory approach, the research analyzes the book Hind Swaraj, among other literature sources regarding swaraj, quotes from Gandhi, and various teachings in Hindu philosophy. The three main Hindu principles outlined in swaraj by Gandhi as discussed in this research are as follows: dharma, vairagya, and atman. The research holds significance due to its ability to its unique perspective on the ideals of Indian independence, and also can be used as an interdisciplinary approach to make principal insights on current social justice and civil rights practices all around the world.
