Abstract

In India, 77 million individuals suffer from diabetes mellitus(DM). Awareness about DM should be spread from a young age. This review aims to identify the gaps in knowledge and awareness of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in the general public with respect to age, gender, and educational qualifications. The study was conducted through an online quantitative survey consisting of 9 questions of 1 point each through snowball sampling. The sample consisted of 74 participants in total. The age range varied from 15 to 74 years with a mean age of 23.96. It was found that the awareness among the various age groups was different and increased with age. The survey found that females are more aware of Type 2 Diabetes than males. A gradual increase with a slight dip before for secondary and high school degrees throughout the educational qualifications. This study provides insight into the various areas where there is a lack of awareness which will help formulate effective plans for spreading awareness regarding DM in India.
